The dean of the College of Medicine; Prof. Dr. Twana Abdulrahman, honored the former editorial board and editor in chief; Prof. Dr. Muhammed Omer, of the Journal of Sulaimani Medical College by being awarded certificates of acknowledgment and gratitude for their sincere services. A workshop hosted by Dr.Sherko Ali commenced with a comprehensive presentation on THE ranking on March 10th, which was attended by many faculty members. This was followed by an open discussion.
On Wednesday, 6th March, the Medical Education Department held a Workshop for the Module/Block leaders, Presented by Dr.Darya S. Abdulateef, and organized by Dr.Darya and Dr.Trifa A. Mahmood.
The Workshop includes an introduction about Formative Assessments, and a step-by-step guide on making Google forms for formative assessments, followed by a practical session; on making Google forms by workshop attendees.
During their child health block, fifth-year medical students went on a field trip to a junior private school where they conducted a seminar on seasonal flu and prevention for first-grade students. They also performed general exams, checked vital signs, and took anthropometric measurements for eighth-year students.
A workshop conducted by Prof. Dr. Hilal al-Saffar entitled “Curriculum Reforms: Lessons Learned” was attended by the academic staff of CoM-UoS. The workshop introduced the steps of curriculum revision in the College of Medicine – Baghdad University and the subsequent collaboration with Nottingham Medical School. Moreover, there was an emphasis on the importance of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), faculty development programs, assessment development, e-learning, feedback, and healthcare services.

The dean of the College of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Twana Abdulrahman, signed a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) with the Royal College of Physicians /London-Iraq Network, represented by its chairman Prof. Dr. Hilal al-Saffar. This MoC establishes a collaboration between the two parties in the fields of medical education, encompassing both undergraduate and postgraduate studies as well as scientific research. Day 1: Integrated Based Learning Teaching Methodology Training – Opening Session
Prof. Dr. Hilal al-Saffar conducted a simulated “Integrated Based Learning Teaching Methodology” groupwork session with the participation of over 100 medical students and academic staff members. The aim was to familiarize both students and academic staff with the latest methodologies in Medical Education and how to effectively manage large numbers of students while keeping them engaged and motivated. On February 19th, 2024, Dr. Trifa A. Mahmood, the Respiratory module leader, conducted a workshop organized by the Medical Education Department. The module members participated, engaging in discussions about recent changes and updates to the current year’s module. Additionally, they explored new teaching methods to facilitate and enhance student engagement during study sessions.
In a significant milestone for the College of Medicine at the University of Sulaimani (CoM-UoS), an accreditation site visit was conducted started February 4th, 2024, by the renowned international assessor team assigned by AQACHEI (Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission for Higher Education Institutions), endorsed by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
During the assessment process, the AQACHEI team engaged in various activities including meetings with university officials, inspections of facilities, and interviews with key stakeholders. The assessment team meticulously evaluated the college’s infrastructure, faculty, and educational processes, with a thorough examination of evidence documents prepared by the CoM-UoS accreditation team.
Accreditation serves as a vital step in the quality assurance process, ensuring alignment with established standards in education and practice. CoM-UoS’s commitment to seeking accreditation reflects its dedication to upholding national guidelines and enhancing standards in the field of medicine. Through this process, the college aims to identify areas of improvement while building on its strengths to produce competent graduates equipped to serve their communities and provide exceptional patient care.
