The College of Medicine hosted a workshop on Question Bank Management on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at the Symposium Hall, University of Sulaimani. The session, conducted by Assistant Pofessor Dr. Sherko Ali Omer, Head of the Basic Sciences Branch. It took place from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM and saw active participation from faculty members across various branches.

The workshop provided an in-depth understanding of effective strategies for managing and developing question banks, a crucial component of medical education. Attendees engaged in insightful discussions and shared experiences, enhancing their knowledge in this vital area.

We extend our gratitude to Dr. Sherko Ali Omer for his expertise and to all participants for their enthusiastic involvement, making the event a success.

The Teaching Quality Assurance Unit successfully held the Yearly TQA Orientation Workshop, organized and presented by Dr.Baraa Ramzi Al-Hashimi, on December 22nd and 24th at 10:00 AM in the symposium hall. Faculty members could attend on either day, as both sessions followed the same schedule.

The workshop addressed several important topics, including updates and regulations, the Course Assessment Document (CAD), the students’ feedback mechanism, and highlights of last year’s achievements. The event provided valuable insights into enhancing teaching quality and maintaining educational standards.

The College of Medicine recently hosted a two-day workshop titled “Skills in Microsoft PowerPoint” on December 15th and 16th, 2024. The workshop took place at the symposium hall from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and was specifically designed for faculty members.

A total of 25 participants attended, having registered in advance for this interactive session. Attendees were required to bring their personal computers with the latest version of Microsoft PowerPoint installed, ensuring hands-on learning throughout the workshop.

This successful event provided valuable insights and practical skills to enhance the participants’ proficiency in creating professional and effective presentations.

The Medical Education Branch-CoM-UoS successfully organized a workshop titled “10 Top Tips on Medical Education: From Theory to Practice” on Thursday at 10:00 AM in the Symposium Hall.

The session, led by Dr. Bashar Raoof from the UK, was highly interactive, incorporating small group activities and group discussions. Participants were divided into smaller groups to facilitate deeper engagement, collaborative learning, and the exchange of ideas.

This workshop provided practical strategies to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and their application in medical education. Faculty members and attendees gained valuable insights to enhance teaching methodologies and improve learning outcomes.

This event reflects our ongoing commitment to advancing medical education and fostering professional development.

The workshop was presented by Consultant Dr. Diar Adnan Aref from the UK and was attended by faculty members from the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing, as well as physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and Family Medicine Arabic Board students.

On December 10th, the second workshop in the series, titled “Palliative Care (Part 1),” was held at the Symposium Hall, College of Medicine, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM. On November 28, 2024, the branch of Basic Medical Sciences successfully hosted a Workshop entitled “Updates on Biological Science Subject” conducted by Dr. Banaz Omar & Dr. Narmeen Nasraldeen the members of the Basic Sciences Branch, College of Medicine-University of Sulaimani, CoM-UoS. The workshop was attended by the faculty members with related specialties. This workshop aims to provide the course member with the updates in the biological Sciences Topic.

On November 25th and 26th, 2024, Assistant Professor Dr. Heshw Sulaiman Rahman, a faculty member of the Basic Science Branch at CoM-UoS, successfully held a two-day workshop on Google Scholar accounts. Approximately 35 faculty members attended the workshop daily, representing the university’s three branches.

The primary goal of the workshop was to guide participants in organizing their Google Scholar profiles in a standardized manner, ensuring alignment with global university ranking requirements.

The workshop featured a hands-on practical session where participants brought their laptops and applied the steps in real-time under expert guidance.

This initiative highlights the university’s commitment to enhancing its global academic presence and supporting faculty development.

On Monday, Nov 18, a Workshop on the Student Selected Component module was successfully conducted by the module directed, Assistant Professor Dr.Shero Saeed Zmnako. The workshop was held at the Symposium hall of the College of Medicine-UoS, and it was attended by the module faculty members.

 

On November 6, 2024, the Basic Sciences Branch successfully hosted a workshop titled Membranes & Receptors Module: Evaluation and Development. Led by Dr. Sheelan Talabany, course leader of the Membranes & Receptors module, and the speakers include Dr.Sheelan and Dr. Darya S. Abdulateef, the workshop provided an in-depth review of the module’s previous years. Discussions focused on the evaluation of integration within the module’s three components and with other modules. Participants, including module members, explored suggestions for enhancing future module development.

The Medical Education branch at the University of Sulaimani successfully conducted the Clinical Skills Foundation Course (CSFC-I) workshop on October 15 and 22, 2024, at the Clinical Skills Lab, CoM-UoS, attended by the Course Faculty members. Organized and presented by Dr. Rozhan Nabaz, the course leader and lecturer, the workshop provided participants with a comprehensive overview, focusing on key elements such as peer assessment and feedback integration.

Peer assessment is an effective approach where individuals review and offer feedback on the work of their peers. This assessment method has become widely used in educational contexts, as it encourages collaboration, promotes active learning, and helps develop critical thinking and self-reflection abilities.

 

On Monday, August 5, 2024, the College Dean, Professor Dr. Twana Abdulrahman, conducted a workshop at the Symposium Hall-CoM-UoS. The workshop was specifically organized for college council members, rapporteurs, module and block leaders, and co-leaders. The session provided a comprehensive overview of course design, aiming to enhance the quality and effectiveness of courses for the upcoming academic year.

An informative workshop entitled “How can you select a suitable Journal for Scientific Promotion” was conducted by Assistant Professor Dr. Heshu S. Rahaman on May 29, 2024, for the academic staff of CoM-UoS. The focus was on selecting a suitable journal for scientific promotion. In this workshop, Dr.Heshu introduced the participants to the rules and regulations required for a journal to be considered for scientific promotion. She thoroughly discussed the conflicts and problems that arise during a paper’s academic promotion submission process and how to prevent these issues. Additionally, she shared her extensive experiences with scientific publications.

A workshop on the same subject was conducted by D.Heshu two weeks ago and is being repeated due to the substantial audience and its importance to the academic staff.

A workshop was held by Assistant Professor, Dr.Heshu S. Rahaman on the 16th of May 2024 for the Academic staff of CoM-UoS, about Selecting a suitable Journal for Scientific Promotion.

 

On Saturday, May 11th, 2024, a workshop titled “Screening and Management of High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents” was conducted by Dr. Rozhan Nabaz and Dr. Jamal Muhammed, the members of the Medical Education and Clinical Sciences Branches at CoM-UoS, respectively, which was performed at Jamal Ahmed Rashid Pediatric Teaching Hospital. The workshop commenced with a pre-awareness evaluation of pediatricians and resident pediatricians, facilitated through a Google Form featuring questions regarding their knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Subsequently, Dr. Jamal delivered a presentation on the subject, followed by a demonstration of blood pressure measurement on a child by Dr. Rozhan. The session concluded with an open discussion and a post-awareness assessment, gathering questions and feedback from the participants.

A workshop was conducted by an official company representative, Mr. Hassan, on May 5, 2024. This workshop was organized for selected academic staff members in the Skill Lab and focused on the installation and use of the Physical Assessment Simulator “Physiko Plus.”

A 2-day Workshop was held by Assistant Professor, Dr.Sherko Zmnako on the 4th and 5th of May 2024 for the Academic staff, about the upcoming research project assessments of year 4 students, at CoM, UoS.

The content of the Workshop:

  1. How to assess the student’s research.
  2. Structural marking during article review and assessment.

On Wednesday, 6th March, the Medical Education Department held a Workshop for the Module/Block leaders, Presented by Dr.Darya S. Abdulateef, and organized by Dr.Darya and Dr.Trifa A. Mahmood.

The Workshop includes an introduction about Formative Assessments, and a step-by-step guide on making Google forms for formative assessments, followed by a practical session; on making Google forms by workshop attendees.

A workshop conducted by Prof. Dr. Hilal al-Saffar entitled “Curriculum Reforms: Lessons Learned” was attended by the academic staff of CoM-UoS. The workshop introduced the steps of curriculum revision in the College of Medicine – Baghdad University and the subsequent collaboration with Nottingham Medical School. Moreover, there was an emphasis on the importance of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), faculty development programs, assessment development, e-learning, feedback, and healthcare services.

On February 19th, 2024, Dr. Trifa A. Mahmood, the Respiratory module leader, conducted a workshop organized by the Medical Education Department. The module members participated, engaging in discussions about recent changes and updates to the current year’s module. Additionally, they explored new teaching methods to facilitate and enhance student engagement during study sessions.

On January 12th, 2024, a workshop titled “The Update in the Management of Incontinence” was conducted by Assistant Professor Dr. Salama Kamil and Lecturer Dr. Rozhan Yassin at the Clinical Sciences branch in the symposium hall of the College of Medicine. The event was attended by several academic staff members from the clinical department.

On 11th Jan 2024, the TQA Orientation Workshop was held by Dr.Baraa Al-Hashimi, CoM-UoS TQA representative. The workshop is held annually to provide orientation and updates on UoS-TQA instructions. The Medical Education and Clinical Science Branch of the CoM actively participated. A recent workshop took place on January 4th for the Basic Science Branch.

On Wednesday, Sep 13th, 2023, a workshop on “Capacity Building of National Assessors Team” was held at the University of Sulaimani for medical colleges.

The workshop took place under the guidance of the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, with support from Sulaimani University’s Medical College and the National Council of Medical Colleges. It saw active participation from a substantial contingent of university professors and medical practitioners. The event unfolded within the conference facilities of Sulaimani University and was centered on the crucial accreditation procedure that all medical colleges in Iraq must undergo to conform to global benchmarks.

Professor Dr. Twana Abdulrahman, the dean of the University of Sulaimani’s College of Medicine, emphasized the importance of the activity related to the trust-receiving process, which he believes should be embraced by all medical schools in Iraq. This step is crucial to ensure that the quality of medical education aligns with international standards, enabling medical graduates to pursue careers worldwide.

To achieve this goal, international consultants from various regions in Iraq have been invited to participate in a workshop. The primary objective of this workshop is to enhance the teaching methodologies employed by medical colleges. These improvements aim to demonstrate the competence and credibility of the colleges, ultimately facilitating the acquisition of trust and recognition for medical education institutions in Iraq. Professor Dr. Twana anticipates that this workshop will be instrumental in securing trust and credibility for medical colleges across the country.
