In a significant milestone for the College of Medicine at the University of Sulaimani (CoM-UoS), an accreditation site visit was conducted started February 4th, 2024, by the renowned international assessor team assigned by AQACHEI (Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission for Higher Education Institutions), endorsed by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
During the assessment process, the AQACHEI team engaged in various activities including meetings with university officials, inspections of facilities, and interviews with key stakeholders. The assessment team meticulously evaluated the college’s infrastructure, faculty, and educational processes, with a thorough examination of evidence documents prepared by the CoM-UoS accreditation team.
Accreditation serves as a vital step in the quality assurance process, ensuring alignment with established standards in education and practice. CoM-UoS’s commitment to seeking accreditation reflects its dedication to upholding national guidelines and enhancing standards in the field of medicine. Through this process, the college aims to identify areas of improvement while building on its strengths to produce competent graduates equipped to serve their communities and provide exceptional patient care.
Medical Education: A Guide to Year One Medical Students
On March 19th, 2024, a seminar was given by our PAL Board member and year six senior student, Aland Mariwan, to year one students, sharing personal experiences and what to expect from medical college
For enhanced support in aiding medical students’ adaptation to the university environment, the College of Medicine’s PAL program has arranged a lecture presented by the SEED Foundation on stress management. This lecture serves as a component of the University Work Environment course.
SEED provides case Management and Mental Health Services for those in need, including IDPs, refugees, and members of the host community.

On 11th Jan 2024, the TQA Orientation Workshop was held by Dr.Baraa Al-Hashimi, CoM-UoS TQA representative. The workshop is held annually to provide orientation and updates on UoS-TQA instructions. The Medical Education and Clinical Science Branch of the CoM actively participated. A recent workshop took place on January 4th for the Basic Science Branch.
During their training in the Pediatric Health and Diseases Block, students from the College of Medicine visited a Montessori kindergarten in Sulaimani to provide health instructions for children and monitor their development. The students shared general health instructions with the children, distributed informative materials, and showed prevention-related videos. We extend our gratitude to the Director of Montessori Republic International Kindergarten, as well as their teachers and staff, for their cooperation and hospitality.

On November 30th, the MSN (Medical Student Network) organized an event to welcome first-stage students. The event featured a variety of activities, including a short video presentation highlighting the college’s history, informational sessions about the college, musical performances, singing, and a speech delivered by the assistant dean.
In appreciation of Mr. Farooq Mullah Mustafa’s assistance in renovating the campus of the Medical College, the Dean of the College, faculty members, administrative staff, and students extended their gratitude for his generosity and positive demeanor.

On Wednesday, Sep 13th, 2023, a workshop on “Capacity Building of National Assessors Team” was held at the University of Sulaimani for medical colleges.
The workshop took place under the guidance of the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, with support from Sulaimani University’s Medical College and the National Council of Medical Colleges. It saw active participation from a substantial contingent of university professors and medical practitioners. The event unfolded within the conference facilities of Sulaimani University and was centered on the crucial accreditation procedure that all medical colleges in Iraq must undergo to conform to global benchmarks.
Professor Dr. Twana Abdulrahman, the dean of the University of Sulaimani’s College of Medicine, emphasized the importance of the activity related to the trust-receiving process, which he believes should be embraced by all medical schools in Iraq. This step is crucial to ensure that the quality of medical education aligns with international standards, enabling medical graduates to pursue careers worldwide.
To achieve this goal, international consultants from various regions in Iraq have been invited to participate in a workshop. The primary objective of this workshop is to enhance the teaching methodologies employed by medical colleges. These improvements aim to demonstrate the competence and credibility of the colleges, ultimately facilitating the acquisition of trust and recognition for medical education institutions in Iraq. Professor Dr. Twana anticipates that this workshop will be instrumental in securing trust and credibility for medical colleges across the country.
